Hearing Recap: HB 1370 – Teen Endangerment
The House Children and Families Committee held a hearing last Tuesday on HB 1370, a bill creating more hurdles for teens seeking abortion. Missouri law currently requires a teen get consent from at least one parent before an abortion. This bill would require the second parent to be notified of the abortion beforehand. Parents rightfully want to be involved in their teens’ lives, and the good news is that most teens do go to their parents when faced with an unintended pregnancy. However, laws like this risk the health and safety of teens who face abuse and violence at home. Research shows these measures do not increase family communication and can put teens’ health and safety at risk.
.The bill sponsor, Rep. Miller (R-Lake Ozark), responded to concerns about teens in abusive situations by saying, “Nothing’s guaranteed in this life.” Representatives from Planned Parenthood, ACLU of Missouri and NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri each testified in opposition to the bill.
